The Ultimate Photoshoot Style Guide: What Outfit to Wear for Senior, Family & Couple Sessions

One of the most common questions I get before a session is: “What should we wear for our pictures?”  Whether you’re planning senior photos, a family session, or a couple shoot, your outfit choices can make a big difference in how your photos look and how confident you feel in front of the camera.

Here are a few of my go-to style tips to help you look and feel your best:

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match Exactly

Aim for a color palette rather than everyone wearing the exact same color. Think of tones that go together instead of look identical—like warm neutrals, earthy browns and greens, or soft pastels. This helps your photos feel natural and cohesive without looking overly planned.

If you’re planning family photos, this works especially well. Instead of all white shirts and jeans, try mixing different shades of beige, olive, rust, or denim. For couple or engagement sessions, pick complementary tones that match the season or location.

2. Choose Comfort and Confidence

The best outfits are the ones you can move in easily and feel confident wearing. Avoid restrictive clothing—anything too tight, too short, or too low-cut—since it can limit your movement or make posing uncomfortable.

When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it truly shows in your photos. That confidence translates into more natural smiles, relaxed body language, and genuine emotion—especially important for senior sessions and couple shoots where movement and interaction are key.

3. Skip Busy Patterns—Go for Texture Instead (Usually!)

Bold patterns can sometimes pull attention away from faces or clash with the background. For most sessions, stick to solid colors or subtle prints, and add visual interest with texture—like fringe, denim, cable-knit, or waffle fabrics.

That said, if you’re planning a senior session or a styled shoot, don’t be afraid to make a statement! A bold pattern or unique outfit can perfectly capture your personality. Just pair it with neutral accessories or simpler pieces to keep the look balanced.

Final Outfit Tips

  • Bring one backup outfit if you’re unsure—options are always a good idea.

  • Pay attention to shoes and accessories—they help complete your look and tie your palette together.

  • Steam or iron outfits ahead of time so you’re not battling wrinkles on picture day.

  • Above all, stay true to your style—you want to feel like the best version of you, not someone else.
